Eric Standley works with hundreds of layers of colored paper creating intricate laser cut stain glass windows. These beautifully constructed works are made up of interlacing positive and negative spaces that seem to “float” in a fabricated suspension. He begins with a drawing, this helps him create the complex range of imagery needed to make a workable design, before cutting and assembling the paper pieces. Standley’s windows are similar in complexity to that of traditional stained glass, and bring to mind the beautiful Northern Rose window of the medieval Chartres Cathedral in France. Standley received his Master of Fine Arts from Savannah College of Art and Design and is currently an Associate Professor of Studio Art and the Foundations of Art and Design Coordinator for the School of Visual Arts at Virginia Tech.

For her upcoming solo show, “In the Dark,” at New York’s Last Rites Gallery, Yoko D’Holbachie (Hi-Fructose Vol. 6 cover artist) has taken a new aesthetic direction her work, trading her signature candy-colored palette for incandescent lighting and colors that appear to glow. D’Holbachie found inspiration in international folklore for this new series of paintings, turning to Haitian, Egyptian and Greek deities to mold her otherworldly characters. Her creatures appear glorified and enshrined. Her unusual use of the chiaroscuro effect in non-realist work elevates these figures, endowing them with a sense of mysticism. “In the Dark” opens on January 19, but until then, check out our preview courtesy of Last Rites Gallery below.

Murals Created with Thousands of Buttons, Pins and Beads by Ran Hwang

Part mural, part sculpture, with elements of tapestry and painting, it’s almost impossible to define the work of Ran Hwang who uses thousands of components including pins, buttons and beads to create these enormous wall-sized images. The works require numerous repetitive motions and Hwang compares her process to a monk achieving zen. Via her artist statement:

I create large icons such as a Buddha or a traditional vase, using materials from the fashion industry. The process of building large installations are time consuming and repetitive and it requires manual effort which provides a form of self-meditation. I hammer thousands of pins into a wall like a monk who, facing the wall, practices Zen.

Starting July 26th Hwang will be exhibiting with Leila Heller Gallery at Art Southampton, featuring one of her newest works, Healing Blossoms (above). The 27-foot long piece is made from paper buttons, beads and sequins that have been gently hammered into 7 large panels.

My artwork is from a photo I took of my little cousin holding out a flower from a plant. I decided to leave the plant in colour and the figure in black and white.

I used green, yellow and brown shades of water colour paint to paint the plant and black Indian ink for the figure. By painting in different shades of colour in the plant, I aimed to portray a realistic 3D image and to show different shaded areas of the plant by using darker and lighters shades of brown, green and yellow. I used lots of different lines- thicker and thinner- in her hair to show the curls and to make them seem more realistic. By applying my brushing strokes either harder or softer I found that I could create a bushy and natural texture in the plant. I intended to make the plant the focal point of this painting. I also tried to use thinner and thicker lines to show creases in her dress. I also used a special paint called masking paint to leave the flowers white whilst the rest of the plant was coloured to hopefully make the flowers stand out.

I like the way her hair turned about because the different types of line used created what I was aiming to see. I don’t mind the shape of the body and the way the dress falls over it. I believe the plant could have been improved to look more 3D and realistic; I could do this by using more shadowing techniques and using even more shades of different colours. Also, some parts of the body, such as the knee, arm and eye., don’t look as realistic as I would of liked.
